Sikkim Scholarship Scheme helps local students get financial assistance for their education. Both the state and central governments offer various scholarships for school, college, diploma and higher education. Students who have secured good marks, belong to weaker sections, or have studied outside Sikkim can get help. There are special scholarships for girls, toppers and those studying in military or public schools. State Government Sponsored Schemes:-

Hon’ble Chief Minister’s Merit Scholarship Scheme (HCMMSS)
Sikkim State Government has launched the Hon'ble Chief Minister's Merit Scholarship Scheme since 2010. The aim of this scheme is to provide free education to meritorious and deserving children from underprivileged families and provide them with the opportunity to study in reputed public schools within and outside the state.
Eligibility:
  • Local students aged 11 to 12½ years.
  • Must have studied in a Government school from Class 1 to Class 5.
  • Should have stood 1st in Class 5 Annual Exam (if not eligible, the next topper is selected).
  • Must appear and qualify the Selection Test conducted by the HRD Department.
Extension of HCMMS Scheme up to Graduation Level
With a view to providing continuous government support to students pursuing higher education under HCMMMSS, the State Government has extended this scheme to the undergraduate level.
Cash Award for CBSE Toppers (Sikkim)
To encourage students to do well in exams, the Sikkim Government gives cash prizes to local toppers of CBSE exams:

Prerna & Merit Scholarship
To encourage students to do well in exams, the Sikkim Government gives cash prizes to local toppers of CBSE exams

Prerna & Merit Scholarship
Merit scholarships are awarded to students of government schools who secure first, second and third positions in the fifth grade open competitive examination conducted by the Human Resource Development Department at the sub-district level and in the eighth grade annual examination at the district level.
Eligibility Merit scholarships are awarded to students who secure first, second and third positions in the open competitive examination of class 5 conducted by the Human Resource Development Department at the sub-district level and in the annual examination of class 8 at the district level. Based on the merit list, the next three students are selected for the Prerna Scholarship at the sub-district and district levels respectively.

Class V - Rs.600 to 1200 (Per Year)
Class VIII - Rs.700 to 1500 (Per Year)

Post  Matric Scholarship
Post Matric Scholarship is provided to all local students of merit and general category studying in various courses within and outside the state. Its online application will start from September to December every year.
Merit Scholarship
Students who score 80% or more in Class XII (in one sitting) are eligible for a scholarship ranging from Rs. 1,600 to Rs. 2,000 per month. The percentage is calculated using the scores of English and three main subjects. Additionally, for some specific subjects, students mentioned in the departmental notification can get a scholarship of up to Rs. 10,000 per year.
General Scholarship
Students who are local residents and score between 60% and 80% marks in a single sitting (or 70% in specific Honours subjects) are eligible for scholarships in selected courses, provided their parents’ combined monthly income is below Rs.10,000/-. Additionally, certain notified subjects qualify for an annual reimbursement of up to Rs.10,000/- as specified by the department.
For Diploma courses, a scholarship of Rs.800/- per month is granted under the Merit category (80% marks) and the General category (60% marks), subject to the same income criteria.
Fellowship Grant for M.PHL & Ph.D Scholars
Scholarship for pursuing Ph.D. courses is awarded at Rs.6,000/- per month for regular candidates working on subjects related to the State of Sikkim, along with a contingency grant of Rs.15,000/- per year for a maximum of three years. In-service candidates are eligible for Rs.3,000/- per month and an annual reimbursement of Rs.12,000/-
The North East Council (NEC)
The North East Council, Shillong, through the state government, has been providing grants to students from the North Eastern states. This assistance is provided for Diploma, Degree, Postgraduate, M. Phil and PhD courses.
Grant of Financial Assistance to local students admitted in Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), Dehradun
The government provides financial assistance of Rs. 20,000 per annum to local students studying at the State Indian Military College (RIMC) in Dehradun. Candidates have to qualify the entrance examination conducted by the Home Department for the institution. The examination is held twice a year in June and December.
Grant of Financial Assistance to local students admitted in Sainik School Golpara, Assam
Local students studying at Sainik School Goalpara in Assam are provided financial assistance of Rs. 20,000 per year. Candidates have to qualify the All India Sainik School Entrance Examination.
Admission of Meritorious Girl Students passing Class IV to Him Jyoti School, Dehradun
Since 2008, a scheme was started to admit two meritorious underprivileged girl students who have passed class IV in Him Jyoti School, Dehradun. Under this scheme, the selected girls are provided free education from class V to class XII. The top two girls in class IV from the state are nominated for free education in Him Jyoti School, Dehradun.


Central Government Sponsored Schemes:--

Scholarship for Schedule Tribe Girl students in Banasthali University, Rajasthan -

Girls from the tribal category in the age group of 9-10 years are selected and nominated for admission up to PhD level in Hindi language under the auspices of Banasthali University.

National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) -

NTSE is a programme designed to identify and support talented students of class 10. It has two stages: the first is held at the state level and the students who clear this stage enter the second stage at the national level organized by NCERT. Every year, 25 students are selected from the first stage to participate in the second stage. Those who succeed at the national level get scholarships to continue their PhD studies starting from class 11.

National Means cum Merit Scholarship (NMMSS) - 

The aim of this scholarship is to support meritorious students from economically weaker sections, prevent dropouts after class 8 and encourage them to continue their education up to class 12. Under this scheme, selected students receive a scholarship of Rs.6,000 per year (Rs.500 per month) to study in a state government, government aided, or local body school.

Eligibility:

The student must be studying in Class VIII and planning to continue education in Classes IX to XII.
The student must be enrolled in a State Government, Government-aided, or local body school.
Parental income from all sources must not exceed Rs.1,50,000 per annum.
Selection will be based on a competitive examination conducted by the Human Resource Development Department (HRDD), Government of Sikkim.

Amount:

Rs.6,000 per year (Rs.500 per month)

National Foundation for Teachers’ Welfare (NFTW) -

There is a scheme under the National Foundation for Teachers Welfare (NFTW) of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, through which financial assistance up to a maximum of Rs. 15,000 per annum is provided to school teachers under the scheme "Assistance for Professional Education of Children of School Teachers". Financial assistance is provided to a ward of a school teacher for pursuing specific professional courses in the fields of engineering, medical, management and technical education.

Nation Scheme of Incentive to Girls for Secondary Education (NSIGSE) -

The aim of this scholarship scheme is to reduce the school dropout rate and encourage admission of Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Scheduled Caste (SC) girls in secondary education. Under this scheme, a fixed deposit of Rs. 3000 is deposited in the name of eligible girls at the time of admission to class IX.

Eligibility:

  • The student must belong to Scheduled Tribe (ST) or Scheduled Caste (SC) category.
  • The girl should be unmarried.
  • She must be below 16 years of age as on 31st March of the year of admission in Class IX.
  • The girl must be enrolled in Class IX in a recognized school.

Amount:

Rs. 3000/-

Post Graduation Level:-

General Scholarship is applicable only to local Sikkimese students who have a valid Sikkim subject certificate or identity card. Only one person from a family can get this scholarship. The total monthly income of both the parents should not exceed Rs. 10,000/-. If the parents are working in the government, then their full salary with all allowances will be considered as income.

Merit Scholarship -

Any student who scores 80% or more marks in a single sitting in English and three best relevant subjects in the Class 12th Board Examination will be awarded a merit scholarship to pursue any course of his/her choice/preference.
