Puducherry Students' Welfare Schemes / Scholarships 2026:

Schemes under the control of Joint Director (Higher Secondary) -

Payment of examination fees by the Govt. to the students appearing Public Exam:-

This scheme helps students studying in government and government aided schools in the Union Territory of Puducherry by paying their public examination fees. It is for students appearing for SSLC/SSC and HSC/Intermediate examinations in regions like Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. The main objective of this scheme is to financially support the students.

Eligibility:

  • Students studying in SSLC and HSC classes in Puducherry, Karaikal, and Mahe regions.
  • Students studying in SSC and Intermediate classes in the Yanam region.
  • Must be enrolled in Government or Government-aided schools.
  • Annual income of parents should not exceed Rs.1,50,000.
  • No income limit for students belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Backward Tribes (BT).

Amount:

  • Eligible students are completely exempted from paying the exam fees themselves.
  • The government picks up the entire examination fee amount directly.

Cash Award to top-ranking holders in SSLC /SSC/Intermediate Public Exam:-

The Government of Puducherry offers a cash award scheme to encourage academic excellence among students. Under this scheme, students securing top 3 ranks in SSLC/SSC/Matriculation (Class 10) and HSC/Intermediate (Class 12) public examinations from both government and private schools in these four regions - Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam are awarded every year. This scheme is applicable to students studying in government/private high and higher secondary schools and government junior colleges in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

Eligibility:

  • Must be a student of either a Government or Private High School, Higher Secondary School, or Government Junior College.
  • The school/college must be located in the Union Territory of Puducherry — including Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe, or Yanam regions.
  • For SSLC/SSC/Matriculation: Students appearing in Class 10 public examinations.
  • For HSC/Intermediate: Students appearing in Class 12 (II Year Public Examinations).
  • Must be among the top 3 rank holders in the respective public examinations in their region.

Amount:

Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe & Yanam Region -

Class 10 (SSLC/SSC/Matriculation) & Class 12 (HSC/Intermediate):

National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme:-

NMMS is a scholarship scheme for students studying in class VIII in the state government and government aided schools of Puducherry. Selection is made through a state level talent search test on the basis of merit. A total of 125 scholarships are awarded every year—93 for Puducherry, 23 for Karaikal, 3 for Mahe, and 6 for Yanam.  The scholarship amount is disbursed directly by the Ministry of Education (MHRD), New Delhi.

Eligibility:

  • The student must be studying in Class VIII in a State Government or Government Aided school.
  • The annual income of the parents from all sources should not exceed Rs.1,50,000.
  • The student must appear for the State Level Talent Search Examination for selection.

Amount:

  • Class 9th to 12th: Rs. 500 per month

National Talent Search (NTS) Awardees:-

This scheme provides cash awards to Class 10 students of Puducherry who are selected in the National Talent Search (NTS) examination. This scheme is open to Class 10 students studying in schools under the State or Central Government in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

Eligibility:

  • The student must be studying in Class X.
  • The student must be enrolled in a school under the control of the State or Central Government in the Union Territory of Puducherry.
  • The student must be selected at the State Level NTS examination conducted by the Directorate of School Education, Puducherry or at the National Level conducted by NCERT, New Delhi.

Amount:

  • State Level Selection: Rs.5,000/- per awardee
  • National Level Selection: Rs.10,000/- per awardee

Award of Puducherry State Post Matric Scholarship Scheme:-

The Puducherry State Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme is a government initiative started in 1968-69 to assist meritorious students from economically weaker backgrounds so that poverty does not prevent them from continuing their studies.

Eligibility:

  • Must be citizen of India and belongs to the U.T. of Puducherry either by birth or domicile i.e., continuous residence not less than 5 years.
  • Must be studying in Class XI or XII.
  • Must have secured promotion to the next higher class with the following minimum marks:
  • 60% marks in Class X (for students now in Class XI).
  • 50% marks in Class XI (for students now in Class XII).
  • The annual family income from all sources should be Rs.75,000 or below.

Amount:

For Day Scholars:

  • Rs.60 per month → Rs.600 per year (per student)

For Hostellers:

  • Rs.100 per month → Rs.1,000 per year (per student)

Award of Pre-Matric Scholarship to Other Economically Backward Class Students:-

The Puducherry OEBC Scholarship Scheme, started in 2005-06, provides financial assistance for the education of Other Economically Backward Classes (OEBC) students from classes VI to X and helps reduce school dropout.

Eligibility:

  • The student must be a citizen of India.
  • Must belong to the Other Economically Backward Class (OEBC) category.
  • Must be a resident of Puducherry by birth or have continuously lived there for at least 5 years.
  • Should be studying in Class VI to X and have been promoted to the next class.
  • The annual family income must be Rs.75,000 or less.

Amount:

  • For Class VI to VIII: Rs.50 per month (Rs.500 per year for each student)
  • For Class IX and X: Rs.75 per month (Rs.750 per year for each student)

Award of Scholarships to Outstanding N.C.C. Cadets of the U.T. of Pondicherry:-

The Puducherry NCC Cadet Scholarship Scheme provides financial assistance to outstanding NCC cadets from the Union Territory. It is available for Senior Division (Boys up to Graduation), Senior Wing (Girls), Junior Division (Boys up to Class XII) and Junior Wing (Girls). A total of 34 new scholarships are awarded every year.

Eligibility:

  • The applicant must be a citizen of India and a resident of the Union Territory of Puducherry.
  • Must be a bonafide NCC cadet under Junior or Senior Division/Wing.
  • Must have attended at least 75% of the parades in the year.
  • Must have attended the required number of camps as prescribed.
  • There is no income limit for this scholarship.

Amount:

  • Senior Division cadets - Rs.500/- p.m.
  • Junior Division cadets - Rs.250/- p.m.

Award of Attendance Scholarship to Girl Students in the Middle Stage of Education:-

The Government of Puducherry has launched this scholarship scheme to enable girls in the age group of 11 to 14 years to continue their secondary education. It aims to increase enrolment and reduce dropout rates among girls studying in government, government aided and recognised private schools in Puducherry. Eligible girls from low-income and non-SC/ST families with good attendance are given Rs. 200 per annum.

Eligibility:

  • The student must be a citizen of India and a resident of the U.T. of Puducherry either by birth or through continuous residence of at least 5 years.
  • Only girl students aged between 11 to 14 years are eligible.
  • The student must be studying in a Government, Government Aided, or Government-recognized Private school in Puducherry.
  • The student must have at least 97% attendance in the previous academic year.
  • The scheme is applicable only to non-SC/ST girl students whose annual family income is Rs.75,000 or below.

Amount:

  • Rs. 200/- per annum

Award of Scholarship to the cadets belonging to the UT of Pondicherry and studying in Rashtriya Indian Military College, Dhradun:-

The Government of Puducherry offers a scholarship scheme for students from economically weaker sections of the Union Territory who are selected to study at the State Indian Military College (RIMC), Dehradun. To be eligible, the student must be an Indian citizen and must have been born in Puducherry or have resided there continuously for at least 5 years.

Eligibility:

  • Must be a citizen of India by birth or permanent residence and belong to Puducherry, i.e., must have resided continuously for at least 5 years.
  • Must be studying at the State Indian Military College (RIMC), Dehradun.

Amount:

  • Rs. 20,000/- per annum

Award of Scholarship to the students belonging to the UT of Pondicherry and studying in Sainik School, Amaravathi Nagar, Coimbatore -

The Government of Puducherry provides a scholarship of Rs. 10,000 per annum to students who are local or long-term residents of the Union Territory (at least 5 years) and are selected for admission to Sainik School, Amaravati Nagar, Tamil Nadu. The students must be from a government or recognized private institution located in Puducherry.

Eligibility:

  • Must be a citizen of India by birth or permanent residence and must be a resident of the Union Territory of Puducherry i.e. must have resided continuously for at least 5 years.
  • The student should have studied in Government or Private schools located within Puducherry UT, which are recognized by the State or Central Government.
  • The student must be currently studying in Sainik School, Amaravathi Nagar, Tamil Nadu.
  • No income limit is applicable for this scholarship.

Amount:

  • Rs.10,000/- per annum

Award of Scholarship to the Children who are recipients of National Child Award for Exceptional Achievements and other National / International Merit Awards -

The Government of Puducherry provides a special scholarship worth Rs.6,000 every year to students who have received the National Children's Award or other national/international merit awards for exceptional achievement. The scheme, which was started in 2006-07, aims to recognize and support talented children in various fields of human resource development.

Eligibility:

  • The student must be a resident of the Union Territory of Puducherry.
  • The student should be studying in an educational institution run by the State Government, Central Government, or a private school recognized by the respective State or Central Government.
  • The student must have received the National Child Award for Exceptional Achievements or other recognized National/International Merit Awards in any field of Human Resource Development.
  • Their application must be countersigned by the Competent Educational Authorities of their respective State/Union Territory.
  • There is no income ceiling for applying to this scholarship.

Free Supply to Students -

The Government of Puducherry aims to ensure 100% school enrolment and retention by providing free educational materials to all students studying from LKG to Class XII in government and government-aided private schools. This scheme specifically supports children in the age group of 6 to 14 years, helping them continue their education without financial burden.

Eligibility:

  • The student must be studying from LKG to XII Standard.
  • Must be enrolled in a Government or Government-aided Private School located in any region of the Union Territory of Puducherry.
  • No parental income limit – all students are eligible regardless of family income.

Govt of Puducherry Scholarship Schemes:

Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College & University Students -

The Central Sector Scholarship Scheme is provided by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to meritorious students of Puducherry who have secured more than 80 percent marks in their Class 12 board examination (CBSE, ICSE, or State Board). It supports students pursuing undergraduate, postgraduate, or professional courses in recognized Indian colleges/universities.

Eligibility:

Fresh Application -

  • Must be an Indian citizen and resident of U.T. of Puducherry.
  • Must have passed Class 12 (10+2) with marks above 80th percentile from CBSE/ICSE/State Board.
  • Must be currently studying in an undergraduate/postgraduate/professional course in a recognized institution in India.
  • Should belong to the non-creamy layer (as per DoPT norms).
  • No other scholarship should be availed at the time of application.
  • Reservation Quota: Follows Central Govt. norms (OBC – 27%, SC – 15%, ST – 7.5%, PH – 3%).
  • Scholarships are divided among Science:Commerce: Humanities = 3:2:1 and distributed equally among boys and girls.

Renewal Application -

  • Should have received the Central Sector Scholarship (fresh) earlier.
  • Must have passed all subjects in the previous year/semester with at least 60% marks.
  • Should have minimum 75% attendance and maintain good discipline.
  • No involvement in ragging or misconduct.
  • Should not avail any other scholarship.

Amount:

  • Graduation level for first three years of College and University courses: Rs.1000/- per month.
  • Post Graduation level: Rs. 2000/- per month.
  • Professional Courses (4th & 5th Year):  Rs.2000/- per month

To apply for NCC Cadet Scholarship in Puducherry, eligible cadets need to collect the application form from their Company or Troop Commander. After filling the required information, the filled form should be submitted to the Officer Commanding of their respective NCC Unit.

Award of Attendance Scholarship to Girl Students in the Middle Stage of Education -

This Directorate collects scholarship proposals directly from the Heads of Institutions through Google Forms. 

Award of Scholarship to the cadets belonging to the UT of Pondicherry and studying in Rashtriya Indian Military College, Dhradun -

To apply for the scholarship, the student selected and admitted to the State Indian Military College (RIMC), Dehradun, will have to submit the application along with the admission certificate to the Department of School Education, Puducherry. The student will also have to submit the necessary documents like residence proof, Aadhaar-linked bank account details and identity card.

Award of Scholarship to the students belonging to the UT of Pondicherry and studying in Sainik School, Amaravathi Nagar, Coimbatore -

To apply, students have to fill the prescribed form and submit it through the Principal of Sainik School. The scholarship is paid directly to the student's Aadhaar-linked bank account through DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer).

Award of Scholarship to the Children who are recipients of National Child Award for Exceptional Achievements and other National / International Merit Awards - 

To apply for Puducherry Government Scholarship for Awardee Students, eligible children need to fill the application form and attach relevant documents like award certificate, domicile certificate (for Puducherry students) and original qualification certificate from their school. Students from outside Puducherry also need to have their application form countersigned by the appropriate education authority of their state or union territory. The completed application form should be submitted through the head of the institution where the student is studying. The school will then forward the application form to the Department of School Education, Puducherry.
