USA Hertz Fellowship 2026-27; The Hertz Fellowship is a prestigious US scholarship program that supports outstanding students pursuing PhDs in science, mathematics, and engineering. Hertz Fellowship 2026-27 Eligibility Criteria

All eligible applicants must: 

  • A college senior, first-year graduate student, or in a gap year before grad school.
  • For a PhD in applied physical sciences, biological sciences, mathematics, or engineering.
  • To focus your research on solving major and urgent problems in society.
  • Must be a US citizen or permanent resident.

Note: This fellowship is not for professional degrees like MD, JD, MBA, DPH, or DVM. However, if you’re doing an MD/PhD, they will support the PhD part.

Resident:

For the Hertz Fellowship, only those who are either U.S. citizens or permanent residents (green card holders) are eligible to apply. This means that applicants must have a legal status that allows them to live, study, and work in the United States on a long-term basis. International students who do not have U.S. citizenship or permanent residency are not eligible for Hertz fellowship.

Hertz Foundation 2026-27 Compensation:

Fellows have two options for receiving fellowship compensation.

Step 1 - Funded only by the Hertz Foundation:

  • $38,000 personal stipend for a 9-month academic year.
  • Full tuition coverage.
  • Renewable up to 5 years.
  • Extra $5,000/year if you have dependent children.

Step 2 - Coordination with another awarding organization:

  • During Hertz period: $44,000 personal stipend + full tuition
  • During NSF period: $9,000/year supplement from Hertz
  • Renewable up to 5 years
  • Extra $5,000/year for dependent children

The Hertz Fellowship compensation package includes an educational expense allowance and a personal stipend worth up to $250,000.
